This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The principal investigator, Bret Findley, is requesting support for his summer research. Funds will be used for summer salary, chemicals, equipment and some travel. These funds will enable him and his undergraduate research students to continue their work on two projects involving electron donor acceptor (EDA) complexes. One project involves investigations into problems with the use of Benesi-Hildebrand plots in the determination of equilibrium constants for the association of ground state EDA complexes. The second project concerns the determination of the energetic difference between the solvent separated radical ion pair (SSRIP) and the contact radical ion pair in photo-induced intermolecular electron transfer reactions in solution. The goal of both of these projects is to answer some of the remaining questions in the area of electron transfer reactions. These reactions are one of the most basic reactions in nature. They occur in numerous chemical and biological systems including the human body. Therefore they are of interest to specialists in the area of biomedical science.
