This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We will test the hypothesis that the bacterium Flavobacterium columnare can cause premature hatching of eggs of susceptible strains of rainbow trout, Onchorhynchus mykiss, by incubating eggs of rainbow trout in Petri plates, which will be inoculated with varying densities of F. Columnare. We will observe hatching and survival of the eggs, estimate bacterial densities on eggs, and determine if premature hatching is associated with extracellular proteases.
