This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Internal Advisory Committee and the Program Director have agreed that this COBRE Program warrants significant statistical support both for the development of the research projects and the clinical research work as well as for the training of the junior investigators. Developing translational research entails statistical capabilities and considerations that are distinct form the laboratory bench research and from descriptive clinical investigation. These unique requirements combine the statistical rigor of basic research studies and Genechip and bioinformatics needed to support the planning and development of clinical trials. In addition strong statistical support is needed to plan and develop clinical trials such that the number of patients, the timing of the samples and the analysis of the data results in objective conclusions that can impact clinical care. The Statistics Core planned here will provide the support for the plans presented by the junior investigators in this COBRE proposal.
