This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We support a diverse group of users who organize their work in different ways. To understand how data might be stored and managed, we have created a prototype database hierarchy. We have also created a prototype browser and will use it to test our ideas against samples of our users' data. Data (images, tomograms, data about images, samples, and projects, and state information) are frequently moved between the programs in the IMOD software package. Some useful data, however, are not collected in electronic form, and overall the collected data are stored in many files, making organizing and sharing inconvenient for our software users. Keeping track of the state and location of many tomograms can also be difficult. We have consulted our users about their data management needs and created several user scenarios. We then analyzed these scenarios to find out how important and universal they are and whether the problems they pose can be answered by training, modifying our software, using outside software, or creating new software. Some issues emerge as worthy of focused attention: organizing collected data, finding and keeping track of images and projects, dissemination of tomograms, and making projects sharable internally. To handle the dissemination of tomograms, we are looking at several options, including the use of existing public databases such as the Cell Centered Database developed by the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research. This approach would demand less investment on our part. We have identified other user scenarios that could be handled with new software. We plan to start with one scenario where new software would be attractive to a variety of users, and extend the prototype browser to handle this scenario. This browser could then be developed to provide more solutions, and integrate other functions, such as launching programs and collecting data.
