Multiple-stage ion-trap mass spectrometric approaches for characterizing monoacyl-PIM (triacylated PIM) and diacyl-PIM (tetracylated PIM) have been developed (14). Identification of the fatty acid substituents and their positions on the glycerol backbone can be achieved as described above.
