Creatine kinase catalyzed reaction rates increase fourfold between 14 and 17 days of age in the rat brain in vivo. Rats underwent chemically induced seizures before and after this age to study the role of CK in the regulation of brain ATP during the high energy demand seizure state. In the younger animals, the CK catalyzed reaction rate decreased during seizures while the concentrations of phosphocreatine and ATP decreased about 20%. Brain electrical activity also decreased in association with decreased CK fluxes. In contrast, the metabolically mature rats showed stable ATP and 20 to 30% decrease in phosphocreatine while the CK flux increased about twofold.
