This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study is a continuation of previous reported findings of elastin-like fibers in addition to collagen fibrils in the superficial zone of articular cartilage. Elastin previously has been thought not to exist in articular cartilage. This study is using non-linear optical microscopy to localize characteristic fluorescing fibers in the laminar propia and superficial zone, and then attempting to confirm their composition by immunofluorescence techniques.
