This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. We are developing interferometric techniques for detecting the rapid optical and mechanical changes which accompany electrical signals in neurons and nerve fibers. The goal is a broadly applicable technique for monitoring the activity of many neurons simultaneously, for extended periods, and with minimal invasion to the cells. Current studies involve in vitro rat hippocampal neurons; in vivo studies are also planned.
