This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The goal of this project is to determine the 3-D arrangement of intermediate filaments in the three cortical cell types (ortho-, meso-, and paracortex) in longitudinally sectioned wool fibres. Previous work conducted at the Bio3-D lab in Boulder, Colorado focussed on transversely sectioned wool fibres. It is expected that more long-range information regarding the arrangements of the intermediate filaments will be obtained with longitudinally sectioned wool fibres. The arrangements of these intermediate filaments within each of three different cortical cells plays an important role in the overall curvature or crimp of the wool fibre.
