This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In order to facilitate the use of liquid and/or volatile matrices for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, particularly for IR-MALDI, a new probe with an embedded Peltier cooler has been designed and constructed. It is now undergoing testing and evaluation. To minimize interruptions on the most heavily used instrument, this project is being carried on using our standby MALDI-TOF MS and is slowed somewhat by the fact that the Finnigan Vision MALDI-TOF MS is no longer supported by its manufacturer, so that spare parts are difficult to obtain. When the design is finalized, similar probes can be fabricated for other MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers.
