This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. One of the objectives of this program is to train new graduate students and professional scientific researchers in new techniques. One such technique which we have focused on is Fourier transform mass spectrometry. This year we had substantial continuation of the graduate students involved, have added two postdocs (who are already skilled at FTMS). While many of the instrumentation techniques need to be taught, there was much less education and more experimentation this year. Still, education in proper operation and maintenance of high performance FTMS instruments requires a large time commitment from the senior FTMS people and a smaller, but substantial time commitment from the senior post-docs.
