This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Basic training for the use of the NE-CAT 8BM consists of the initial safety training, beamline orientation, crystallographic assistance (both general and beamline specific), review of common problems and solutions, followed by periodic checking during the visit. All trips begin with a safety orientation. This covers the overall environmental, safety, and health plans. The safety procedures are followed by a beamline orientation. This introduction to the beamline is a guide to the specific equipment in the experimental hutch. Throughout the technical training of the use of the beamline, general and beamline specific crystallographic questions are discussed and answered. At the present time, HKL2000 is the primary program used in data reduction. Instruction in the use of this program is provided. Other programs in the structure solution pathway are available and support for the use of these programs is also provided when needed. The usual support for training and starting a new group takes on average four hours, however the staff spends the better part of the first day with the experimenters. 98 users were trained at 8-BM during this period.
