This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project is designed to obtain high resolution structures of several important components involved in the transport of proteins or other molecules across membranes. A major goal are Xray structures of the protein-translocating channel bound to its partners, the ribosome or SecA. Another goal is an Xray structure of the CcdA protein, which is responsible for moving reducing equivalents across the bacterial plasma membrane. We are also trying to obtain a high resolution structure of the reticulons, proteins involved in the formation of membrane tubules.
