This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. As an outgrowth of our training and education mission we have collaborated with the LSU SVM in establishing a Louisiana Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Experimental Infectious Disease Research. This is an NIH-funded program designed to facilitate the transition of junior investigators to independence. Hallmarks of the program include senior faculty mentoring junior faculty as co-investigators as well as multidisciplinary mentoring and external advisory committees ensuring success of the overall program. The five selected junior investigators are tenure track assistant professors. The COBRE represents a strategic alliance between the LSU SVM, the LSU College of Basic Sciences (CBS) and the Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) with the LSU SVM taking the lead role. The initial phase of the proposed program encompasses five integrated R01-like research projects by five selected junior investigators under the overall umbrella of infectious disease pathogenesis. Two of the five projects are at the TNPRC (focused on AIDS) along with the nonhuman primate core to support these projects. In the last year Dr. Cristian Apetrei has 'graduated' from the COBRE and obtained independent R01 funding. A replacement for Dr. Apetrei will be selected at the conclusion of a competitive review process.
