This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. As an outgrowth of our training and education mission, we have collaborated with the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in establishing a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in infectious diseases. The COBRE is an NIH-funded program designed to facilitate the transition of junior investigators to independence. Thus far, two of the TNPRC-based junior faculty have 'graduated' to independent R01 funding (Apetrei and MacLean). Currently, the COBRE supports two pilot projects and one full research project at the TNPRC. The junior investigators supported by the pilot projects are Drs. Binhua Ling and Bapi Pahar. The two pilot projects both involve the nonhuman primate model of AIDS. Dr. Ling's project is entitled 'Immune restoration and protection in SIV-infected long term nonprogressors' and Dr. Pahar's project is entitled 'The importance of antigen specific IgA responses in controlling SIV/SHIV infections'. The full research project is on tuberculosis and is lead by Dr. Dr. Deepak Kaushal. The title of the project is 'Analysis of the role of M. tuberculosis sigH in pathogenesis'.
