This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Only two out of four chimpanzee subspecies (Pan troglodytes), P.t. troglodytes (P.t.t.) and P.t. schweinfurthii (P.t.s.), carry specific SIVs. We identified genomic features indicating that SIVcpzPtt and SIVcpzPts may have partly different evolutionary histories. A maximum likelihood test to discriminate between hypotheses of a common versus separate origin of SIVcpzPtt and SIVcpzPts revealed three putative regions of separate histories. Thus, it is conceivable that the P.t.t and P.t.s ancestor was infected with a specific SIVcpz, a recombinant virus harboring fragments of Cercopithecidae SIVs. After P.t.t and P.t.s split, SIV superinfection(s) leading to further recombination(s) resulted in the emergence of SIVcpzPts.
