This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This award provides salary support for Michael Crutcher to carry out work with our cynomolgus monkeys. This work seeks to clarify the role in memory of the hippocampal region and the adjacent and interconnected perirhinal cortex. Using a series of behavioral tasks we are determining whether and to what extent monkeys with lesions of these two brain regions are impaired on recognition memory, spatial memory, the memory for motor skills, and perception. This work is relevant to our understanding of how memory is organized in the brain and to understanding the memory impairment associated with a wide range of human conditions, e.g. aging, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke.
