The objective of the project is to determine whether self-aggressive behavior in singly-housed rhesus macaques can be significantly lowered in frequency by using enrichment devices. Nine monkeys were observed in their living cages for seven weeks. During weeks 1, 3, 5, and 7 no enrichment devices were present. During weeks 2, 4, and 6, one of three devices (grooming fleece, net with ball, privacy barrier) was attached to the front of the monkeys' cages. All monkeys experienced each device in a counterbalanced fashion. Preliminary analyses indicate that all three enrichment devices affected the monkeys' behaviors in their living cages. Results from this study may prove useful in suggesting enrichment devices for individually-housed macaques.
