This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Objective: UNAIDS estimates that there are 35-40 million people infected with HIV. Heterosexual transmission of HIV continues to spread this epidemic to an estimated 3-4 million people a year. Development of acceptable female controlled strategies, including microbicides, is a high priority for national and international agencies. The SIV/rhesus macaque vaginal transmission model has been used to test anti-HIV microbicides.
