Research Core - The Research Core will be responsible for supporting three major research projectsand an annual pilot program. The three major projects follow the theme 'exploring health disparities inintegrated settings.' These studies also seek to integrate biological, behavioral, and socialdeterminants of health. The three research projects are: Exploring Health Disparities in Integrated Communities (EHDIC) - an epidemiologic study ofthe adult residents of racially integrated census tract in Prince Georges County, MD(suburban) and Edgecombe County, NC (rural). These data collections will compliment thedata collection conducted by the center in 2003 in Southwest Baltimore, an urban environment. What is notable about these communities is that they are racially integrated (with equalnumbers of African and white Americans), and there are no race differences in income oreducation. Inflammation and Platelet Activation in Cardiovascular Health Disparities - a test of thehypothesis that race differences in socio-environmental exposures lead to a pro-inflammatorypredisposition which can in turn lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This studywill be conducted using data from the HANDLS (Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversityacross the Life Span study), a study conducted by National Institution on Aging, Laboratory ofCellular and Molecular Biology of the Gerontology Research Center. This study is designed tomerge biological, behavior, and social determinants of health disparities without confoundingfrom socioeconomic status. Residential Segregation and Healthcare Disparities - an examination of the degree to whichrace and ethnic disparities in healthcare use can be attributed to race and ethnic differences inaccess to healthcare providers resulting from residential segregation.
