Public Health Relevance

Schistosoma mansoni (Sm) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) are endemic infections in Africa with substantial prevalence, morbidity and mortality. Proposed is a clinical and mechanistic investigation to characterize the nature and magnitude of impact from Sm infection on the course of chronic HBV infection. Findings will provide insight for understanding and managing the co-occurring endemics of Sm and HBV in many regions of Africa.
