This research is designed to investigate nutritionally-induced alterations in hormones and the energy needs of the body. It is specifically designed to study the effects of over- and undernutrition on thyroid hormone and catecholamine metabolism, and changes in thermogenesis (energy expenditure). The nutritionally-induced alterations in hormones will be correlated with changes in thermogenesis to determine whether the changes in thermogenic hormones represent adaptive responses to altered nutrition with important survival value and whether obesity can result from a defect in adaptive thermogenesis.
