This is an application for funds to support a scientific meeting of the International Network on Health Expectancy (REVES or Reseau Esperance de Vie en Sante). The meeting will take place on October 5-7, 1995 at the Westin Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. This will be the eighth meeting of a group of international scientists devoted to the development of methods of measuring health expectancy and understanding the individual and societal implications of current and prospective mortality transitions. The theme of REVES 8 will be the Policy Implications of the Measures and Trends in Health Expectancy. The previous seven meetings of REVES took place in Quebec, Canada (1989), Geneva, Switzerland (1990), Durham, North Carolina (1990), Leiden, The Netherlands (1991), Ottawa, Canada (1992), Montpellier, France (1993), and Canberra, Australia (1994). The ninth meeting of REVES is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland. The principal investigator for this proposal is Dr. S. Jay Olshansky from the Center on Aging, Health and Society at the University of Chicago. Olshansky is a member of REVES' organizing committee; other members include Dr. Colin Mathers (the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare), Drs. Karen Retches and Jean Marie Robins (INSERM, France), and Dr. Russell Welkins (Statistics Canada, Ottawa). Funds are sought for: 1) conference organization, logistics, and selected meals; 2) travel expenses for six people with papers accepted for presentation at the meeting - four for students and two for scientists from a developing nation; and 3) expenses associated with pre-conference and post-conference publications and selected articles from the REVES 8 meeting in a special issue of the Journal of Aging and Health.
