The World Congress for Electricity and Magnetism in Biology and Medicine is a cooperative effort of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, the Bioelectrical Repair and Growth Society, the Bioelectrochemical Society, and the European Bioelectromagnetics Association to bring together their members and others from the world's health engineering and allied research communities into a comprehensive meeting that will pursue areas of common interest, problems and progress. The objective of the Congress is to provide an improved understanding of health related issues of electromagnetic fields and the underlying mechanisms of interaction. This forum will provide an information exchange between those who study the therapeutic and diagnostic applications of electromagnetic energy that include bone repair, nerve regeneration, neuromuscular stimulation, soft tissue repair, oncology and MRI and those who study potential carcinogenicity and health hazards of electromagnetic energy associated with power lines, appliances, computers, video display terminals, communications equipment, radar and microwave devices. The June 14-19, 1992 meeting will have tutorial sessions, morning plenary sessions and focussed afternoon sessions featuring platform and poster presentations in the basic sciences medical applications, environmental issues and devices. Electromagnetic Fields in Modern Society, will provide an overview of the science, medical advances and environmental concerns. Beneficial Effects of Electromagnetic Fields; Medical Devices and Technology will include clinical dosimetry, bone repair, soft tissue repair, neuromuscular stimulation, hyperthermia/HF effects, nerve regeneration and drug delivery. Medical Devices and Applications will include redox process, molecular electronics, electroporation, magnetic resonance imaging and high frequency technology. Environmental Issues and Cancer include epidemiology, dosimetry, laboratory studies, risk assessment and standards and management of fields. Basic Sciences of Electromagnetic Energy, will include signal transduction, membrane mechanisms, molecular mechanisms, cell cycle and circadian rhythms. It is estimated the Congress will be attended by over 600 scientists, and health professionals since the supporting societies have agreed to forego individual meetings and to promote this World Congress as their scientific meeting for 1992.
