? We have developed a water-based gel that changes color in response to doses of ionizing radiation, producing a stable, non-diffusing image of the radiation dose distribution. We have also developed an optical scanner system to record and manipulate the three-dimensional images. The system has significant advantages over competing methods. In this Phase I project we will demonstrate whether this system is suitable for use as a quality assurance method for radiation therapy treatment planning. The research program will determine the practical limits of radiation dose sensitivity under clinical conditions, and investigate how changes in gel composition and scanning techniques will affect the sensitivity and reproducibility, as well as cost. We will obtain much of the necessary data using clinical irradiation facilities and procedures. In Phase II we plan to establish the accuracy of the system for dose measurement under clinical conditions, develop software to enhance the user-friendliness of the system and perform clinical trials to support a possible application for FDA approval as a 510(k) device. Our long-term commercial objectives are to bring this technology to market by licensing the gel technology to a specialty chemical company, and licensing the scanner technology to a company that currently sells radiation therapy equipment. ? ?
