Fayetteville State University (FSU) of southern North Carolina is a Comprehensive Level I university offering degrees at the associate, baccalaureate, and master's levels in the biological sciences. As part of its primary mission of providing quality education to its students, one goal of the university is to broaden and enrich its academic environment by fostering new and ongoing research projects in the biomedical sciences. Since its inception in 1982, the FSU Biomedical Research Program (BRP) has contributed significantly to the development of the faculty and students of the College of Arts and Sciences at FSU. This competitive renewal proposal seeks funding for two subprojects-- continuing and two new research projects. The research subprojects are as follows: 1. Effects of selected metal salts on the fidelity of DNA synthesis in vitro (Bell) 2. Aryloxypropanolanies from 3-azetidinols and phenols (Higgins) 3. Characterization of ceftazidime resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae (Raynor) 4. Theoretical studies on elasticity of microemulsions (Wu). The proposed research activities of these subprojects should impact significantly on the goal of improving human health by increasing the body of research data and knowledge in these critical areas of molecular genetics, microbiology, bio-organic chemistry, and biophysics. Additionally, these projects will help to improve the diversity of research activities at FSU and provide opportunities for minority undergraduate and master's students to be engaged in quality scientific research projects.
