We request funds for a Thermo Fisher Scientific Q Exactive HF-X mass spectrometer and nano UPLC to be housed in the Proteomics Core of the UC Davis Genome Center. The Proteomics Core facility is the sole resource in the area and performs a large number of proteomic analyses. However, the needs of many researchers in the areas of quantitative proteomics are currently not being met with existing instrumentation. The Thermo Scientific Q Exactive HF-X is a next- generation state-of-the-art mass spectrometer that has several unique characteristics that will enable the proteomics core to perform additional quantitative proteomics profiling experiments such as Data Independent Analysis (DIA). The Q Exactive HF-X is expected to have an immediate and a significant impact on the research efforts of the major users listed in this proposal and the greater UC Davis research community and the nascent biotechnology start-ups clustered in the area. This LC-MS system will be integrated into our Proteomics Core facility which has been operating successfully since 2005. The Proteomics Core?s existing infrastructure will oversee the operation, maintenance, and management of this instrument. Additionally, the UC Davis Genome Center and the UC Davis Central Campus will support the additional funds needed for this instrument demonstrating UC Davis?s continued commitment for proteomics and the successful housing and efficient utilization of NIH funded instrumentation.

Public Health Relevance

The acquisition of a Thermo Q-Exactive HF-X mass spectrometer is requested to provide new capacity for quantitative proteomics, especially Data independent analysis and Tandem Mass Tag (TMT) labeled samples. It will impact research in several public health-related topics including AIDS-associated fungal infections, human reproduction and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS).
