The Graduate Program in Macromolecular and Cellular Structure and Chemistry (MCSC) at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) offers student multi-disciplinary training in the fields of molecular biology, cell biology, structural biology, and immunology. This application proposes establishment of a specific Interdisciplinary Training Program in Immunology at TSRI as part of this unique and successful graduate program. The MCSC Graduate Program attracts top-notch applicants and has been successful in training high quality scientists that have continued in research. This training grant will allow additional recruitment and training specifically in the field of Immunology under the auspices of the MCSC Graduate Program. The faculty mentors in this training program are at the forefront of research into the mechanisms involved in generating and regulating immune responses, including responses of both the adaptive and innate arms of the immune system. The unusually wide diversity of areas of investigation within the Training Program, including molecular and cellular regulation of the development of B and T lymphocytes, regulation of the immune response by soluble mediators and cell surface molecules, biochemical signaling involved in cellular activation and adhesion, structure function analysis of antigen recognition, regulation of inflammation, genetics and mechanisms of autoimmunity, and the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, affords excellent opportunities for graduate student research and training in Immunology. Participation in scientific meetings research-in programs seminars, journal clubs, and lecture series gives students exposure to many different disciplines and experience in presenting their research to others. The most critical problems in modern Immunology require multi- disciplinary approaches to solve them. Through coursework and independent research, students in the Immunology Training Program will be well equipped to tackle some of these problems using cutting edge approaches. The availability of a large of a large number of highly collaborative faculty at TSRI encompassing Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Molecular and Experimental Medicine, Neurobiology, Neuropharmacology, Vascular Biology and Chemistry Departments, offers the student numerous opportunities to bring together varied expertise and apply novel approaches to solving important problems in Immunology.
