EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. The need for individuals who comoine broad understanding of psychiatric disturbances with expert knowledge of epidemiology continues to be strong. Continuation of a training program in psychiatric epidemiology is proposed. The program is located in the Department of Mental Hygiene of the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, which is the oldest and largest school of public health in the nation. The department has as its core discipline epidemiology, and isthe only department-level organizationdevoted to mental health in aschool of public health in the country. The training program is tightly integrated with the Departments of Epidemiology, and of Biostatistics. These three departments provide a rich learning environment for trainees. The program has close links with the department of Psychiatry and BehavioralSciences in thd School of Medicine, which provides many opportunities for clinical exposure and substantive collaborations. The department of mental hygiene provides extensivephysical, organizational,intellectual and financial support for the program. | Core faculty aredrawn from the four collaborating departments, and are recognized leaders in the field of psychiatric epidemiology. Faculty are engaged in diverse research projects which provide an array of earning and apprenticeship opportunities for trainees. High quality applications to the program originatefrom throughout the country, and heavily outnumber available positions. The product of the program is expected to be an individual who identifies psychiatric epidemiology as their career, and who conducts innovative and correct research in this area. Predoctoral students undertake the core curriculum in mental hygiene as well as epidemiology, and are encouragedto include the Masters level curriculum in biostatistics as part of their doctoral degree. Predoctoral students are expected to finish the doctoral program in 4-5 years, and to publish three or more scientific articles from their thesis and other research conducted during their training. Postdoctoral fellows, who include a mix of physicians and social/psychological/biologicalscientists, design a program of epidemiologic research, n concert with their mentor, which fits their particular needs and abilities. They areexpected to publish three or more articles for each of two years in the program. Historically, graduates of the program have provided internationel leadershipto the field of psychiatric epidemiology.
