This is a competing renewal application for the Minority Access to Research Careers Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (MARC U*STAR) Program at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). The objectives of this MARC U* Program are: (1) to increase the number of highly qualified minority students who can compete successfully for entry into, and completion of graduate programs leading to the Ph.D degree in Biology, Chemistry, Math and Computer Science, and Psychology. (2) to provide strong curricula and research opportunities in the participating departments to prepare students for careers in biomedical research; and (3) to increase the students awareness of the need for scientific integrity and adherence to ethical principles in research. These objectives are expected to be accomplished via specific experiences that are unique to MARC U*STAR TRAINEES. These experiences include (1) an on-campus research orientation program that occurs during the initial summer of the trainees first year, (2) an introduction to scientific writing and computer during the first summer, (3) an off-campus research experience during each summer, (4) a weekly MARC seminar, (5) on-going campus research that culminates in an undergraduate research thesis, (6) travel to, and participation in, national, regional, state, and local scientific meetings, and (7) discipline-specific curriculum enrichment elements such as honors courses in English, Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. ? ?
