The COVID-19 pandemic is the most important health challenge to the US population within a century. Most epidemiological data have focused on cases that resulted in severe respiratory disease seen predominantly in adults. Inadequate information regarding the infection burden in children is available, especially in the context of households that are prospectively monitored with repetitive testing. This information is critical to determine the silent and symptomatic infection rate in children. The NIAID-supported Human Epidemiology and Response to SARS- CoV-2 (HEROS) survey study is designed to fill this gap.

Public Health Relevance

The study has enrolled and prospectively observes eligible children that are current participants in NIH-funded pediatric research studies and their household members. HEROS currently involves approximately 1,300 households and approximately 4,000 enrolled household members (children and adults). This supplement is essential to addressing the aims of the project.
