Tufts University Medical SchoolDr. Edward Goldberg is designing molecular sensors that will use magnetic reporting to detect anthraxinfection. The long-term goal is to develop a hand-held diagnostic device that will use a non-destructivedetection method to identify anthrax in patient samples. They are using bacteriophage tail fiber protein todetermine the magnetic susceptibility of protein-nanoparticle conjugates for use as detection biosensors. Herequested the production of E. coli cell pellets infected with a mutant form of the long tail fiber of bacteriophageT4. . co// cultures were grown and infected with bacteriophage. Because we use fermentors with aprogrammable control system we were able to provide the fast growing culture with sufficient oxygen supply, aproblem Dr. Goldberg had encountered in his previous efforts in his own laboratory. We completed onefermentation run that generated 180 g of cell pellet which was further processed in Dr. Goldberg's laboratory.
