Clinical trials drive translational research from basic discoveries, to first-in-human investigations, to the pragmatic comparative effectiveness studies that form the basis of clinical implementation. Multicenter clinical trials enhance generalizability and are required for rare diseases or uncommon conditions; once established, stable large-scale trial networks are more efficient, resulting in faster accrual. The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) proposes new processes that link the emerging clinical trials network of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program to the University of Michigan (U-M) clinical trial infrastructure, while accelerating patient accrual in multicenter clinical trials. MICHR?s objective is to be an active and dynamic partner to the various CTSA innovation centers, while engaging U-M investigators and communities to contribute to the success of the CTSA clinical trials network. We intend to achieve these objectives by pursuing the following specific aims: 1) Develop a ?Rapid-Response? Clinical Trials Center that serves as a liaison to the Trial Innovation Centers and accelerates trial implementation; 2) Expand the MICHR recruitment program to serve as a liaison to the Recruitment Innovation Centers, while developing mobile and interactive technology that engages our communities and facilitates recruitment; 3) Advance informatics techniques that aid cohort discovery and point-of-care alerts for recruitment opportunities. We expect to build significantly on MICHR?s established foundation for supporting multicenter clinical trials and to be strong partners to the CTSA innovation centers. The Rapid Response team, mobile and interactive engagement/recruitment technology, and enhanced informatics capability for cohort discovery and real-time recruitment support will accelerate and expand the capacity for patient accrual and contribute to the success of the CTSA clinical trials network.
