Principal Investigators reported that during the 2009 fiscal year 77 federal research projects overseen by 38 principal investigators were supported by the facility. Of this total 48 projects (62%) and 23 PI's(60%) were from NIDDK, 29 projects and 15 PI's were from other parts of NIH (NIAID 16-8,NIAMS 1-1,NIDA 6-1,NCI 2-1,NHGRI 1-1, NIDCR 1-1), and 1 PI and 1 project was from the FDA. One project (from Wei Yang, NIDDK) is excluded because a technical problem prevented the facility from providing analysis good enough to be considered support. One non-NIDDK PI (Martin Brechbiel, NCI) used the facility in FY2009 but has switched to NCI resources as a result of the reduced resources and staff time available for problematic non-NIDDK work. Although useful metrics for some things the PI-count and project-count are an oversimplification. It is important to note that the amount of support provided to each project varies widely. For instance support of small molecule chemists at NIDDK and a number of projects involving biopolymer analysis at NIDDK were very involved while most of the support provided to non-NIDDK labs involved one or two low staff time experiments. Support of Kenner Rice (NIDA) is a special case as he only recently move to NIDA from NIDDK and has had a long-standing working relationship with the facility in all its historical forms. Please see the individual research reports indexed here to learn more about the facility's role and the important research it supports.
