Proposal Number: 0753203 Principal investigator: Ken Klingenstein Institution: University of Colorado Proposal Title: A Workshop on Scientific and Scholarly Workflow Cyberinfrastructure: Improving Interoperability, Sustainability and Platform Convergence in Scientific and Scholarly Workflow

Project Summary

This proposal describes a workshop targeting a community dialog on common elements, opportunities for interoperability, and other issues surrounding scientific and scholarly workflow systems in development and use today. The workshop deals with pragmatic matters in taking stock of existing workflows and emphasizes the exploration of common elements and engines, connectedness, sustainability, federation, and the potential to distill open and common services applicable across scientific and scholarly workflow. The proposal notes a number of planned workshop outcomes: identifying similar and dissimilar concepts across existing workflows; how to leverage existing scientific workflows; investigating the use of ESB or SOA in workflow environments; discussing the role of federation and federated roles in workflows; and outlining an initial plan to move the community forward on convergence and consensus opinion areas for workflow. A report will be produced out of the workshop.
