The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is one of the worlds pre.eminent radio astronomical facilities. It operates telescopes in Green Bank, West Virginia, near Socorro, New Mexico, and near Tucson, Arizona. Headquarters are located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The NRAO is currently in the process of constructing the Very Long Baseline Array, an array telescope with 10 antennas spread between Hawaii and the U. S. Virgin Islands and an Operations Center located in Socorro. The NRAO is a National Center with its instruments available to any scientist to carry out scientific programs on a peer.reviewed, competitive basis.
