Proposal Number: CTS-0619528-MRI Principal Investigator: Guangzhao Mao Institution: Wayne State University

The acquisition of the new X-ray scattering instrument will catalyze and enhance research projects at Wayne State University in the areas of thin film and nanoparticle design, synthesis, engineering and materials characterization. This system will allow measurements of high-resolution X-ray diffraction, in-plane X-ray diffraction, X-ray reflectometry, grazing incidence diffraction, and small angle X-ray scattering. The X-ray facility will become a core instrument for projects in 1) directed self-assembly of nano-crystals and thin films, 2) nanoparticles, nanostructures, and devices for optical and magnetic applications, and 3) biomaterial coatings for biosensor and drug delivery.

The proposed nanomaterial research will impact a large number of federally funded projects ongoing at Wayne State University, in technological areas including drug encapsulation and delivery, molecular electronics, high-throughput screening, sensors and device manufacture. The acquisition will contribute to both research and training activities, and research infrastructure at Wayne State University. The X-ray instrument will be used as a teaching tool for a number of interdisciplinary courses and community outreach activities.
