RECOMB (http://recomb2012.crg.cat/) is an international scientific conference bridging the computational, mathematical, and biological sciences. The conference features keynote talks by preeminent scientists, together with presentations of refereed research papers in computational biology, special sessions and poster sessions. This proposal requests travel support for US conference participants, with priority going to graduate students who will be presenting paper or posters.

Project Report

RECOMB is one of the premier computational biology conferences. The Sixteenth Annual International Conference on Research in Computational Molecular Biology (RECOMB 2012) was held in Barcelona, Spain on April 21-24, 2012. The conference consisted of five keynote talks (Ada Yonath, Eileen Furlong, Richard Durbin, Alfonso Valencia and Thomas Gingeras), 31 refereed papers, 6 contributed presentations corresponding to journal publications, and more than 130 poster presentations. Additionally, the conference consisted of a special session on "Emerging Areas in Computational Biology," consisting of four talks (Dirk Evers, Laxmi Parida, Teresa Przytycka and Christina Leslie) and a panel discussion. This proposal provided 26 students with travel awards so that they could attend RECOMB 2012. Students were selected by a committee headed by Benny Chor, the chair of the RECOMB 2012 meeting. Each student either presented a poster or gave a talk. All talks were accompanied with a peer reviewed publication in the conference proceedings. The meeting provided an excellent venue for furthering the professional development of these students. Students attended talks, poster sessions, the special session panel, and conference social events. In addition to presenting their own work, this conference was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about state-of-the-art techniques in computational biology, as well as to network.
