This award by the Chemistry Division supports a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of California Riverside for the summers of 2006-2008. The program director is Cynthia Larive who is assisted by co-PI Ashok Mulchandani. Eight students recruited from across the country will engage in full-time interdisciplinary research in Bioanalytical Science within the stimulating atmosphere of a research community that is both active and interactive. The goal of the program is to stimulate an interest in pursuing science or engineering as a career. Recruiting efforts will emphasize Hispanic Serving Institutions and Minority Postsecondary Institutions. UCRs status as a Minority Postsecondary Institution and geographic proximity to a diverse population base provide a unique opportunity to expose undergraduate researchers to a vibrant research environment that is also ethnically diverse. Program participants will be housed as a group and will participate in common seminars, social activities, and provided opportunities to present the results of their research. An Orientation Day, weekly seminars, a Research Progress Symposium, and a Poster Day are among the planned activities.
