The Analytical and Surface Chemistry (ASC) program of the Division of Chemistry will support the research program of Prof. Peter Chen of Spelman College, a primarily undergraduate research institution (RUI). Prof. Chen and his students will develop 2D spectrochemical anlysis methods for the analysis of complex chemical samples. They will develop and use 2D resonance Raman spectroscopy (C2DRRS) to seprate and resolve overlapping spectral peaks and sort these peaks by quantum number, sequence and selection rule. Prof. Chen and his students will develop new tools to analyze 2D data and demonstrate the superiority of 2D over 1D spectroscopy in studying the dynamics of chemical reations. The study will provide excellent training opportunities to undergraduate students at Spelman College, a historically Black collge for women, and prepare them for graduate work in the field of chemistry.
