This Chemistry Division award supports a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of Kansas for the summers of 2007-2009. Joseph A. Heppert is the program director and Mikhail V. Barybin is the co-director. The program will provide initial research experiences for ten students/year in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment. Participants will be recruited from primarily undergraduate institutions with substantially limited or no research infrastructures. Key components of this program are career enhancement and educational activities that will encourage and prepare the students for graduate studies and careers in emerging and interdisciplinary areas of the chemical sciences. Close interactions between the participants and their faculty, graduate student, and postdoctoral mentors will provide guidance and feedback throughout the program and beyond. In addition, the students will develop important skills for the oral and written presentation of their research accomplishments.
