This grant will provide travel support for undergraduate and graduate students to attend and present their research at the 47th Annual Technical Meeting of Society of Engineering Science. The technical meeting will be held October 4-6, 2010 at Iowa State University, Ames, IA. Approximately 20 students will present their research as part of the undergraduate and graduate paper competition during the technical meeting. Recipients will be selected based on contributions outlined in extended abstracts and relevance to the overall theme of the technical meeting.

The Society of Engineering Science fosters and promotes the exchange of ideas and information among the researchers working in the field of mechanics that lies at the interface between engineering sciences and mathematics. The travel support provides the financial means for undergraduate and graduate students to attend the technical meeting, participate in the student paper competitions, intermingle with leading researchers, and advance their professional and intellectual development in areas of national importance. By encouraging participation of undergraduate and graduate students, who typically have limited financial resources for conference travel, the long range interests of NSF in broadening participation and preparation of an engaged workforce are served. This support will be especially important for the undergraduate researchers, as it will motivate them to pursue graduate education and expose them to the state-of-art research developments.

Project Report

This grant provided travel support for 32 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at US universities to attend and present their research at the 47th Annual Technical Meeting of Society of Engineering Science. The technical meeting was held October 4-6, 2010 at Iowa State University, Ames, IA. The funding was used to help defray registration, hotel, food, and transportation costs of students presenting their research as part of the undergraduate and graduate paper competition during the technical meeting. Recipients were selected based on contributions outlined in extended abstracts and relevance to the overall theme of the technical meeting. Special efforts were made to encourage undergraduate researchers through outreach to student chapters of engineering societies; NSF funded undergraduate research participants and local four-year colleges Advances in mechanics are having a dramatic impact on fields as diverse as biology, materials science, electrochemistry, tribology, biochemistry, surface physics, and medicine. The Society of Engineering Science fosters and promotes the exchange of ideas and information among the researchers working in the field of mechanics that lies at the interface between engineering sciences and mathematics. The organization is comprised of scientists, engineers and mathematicians from around the world who recognize that solutions to critical modern problems transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. The SES technical meetings are recognized as leading forums for bringing together diverse, interdisciplinary groups of researchers to discuss advances in highly focused symposia. Intellectual Merit: The proposed travel support provided the financial means for 32 undergraduate and graduate students to attend the technical meeting, participate in the student paper competitions, intermingle with leading researchers, and advance their professional and intellectual development in areas of national importance. Broad Impacts: By encouraging the participation of the undergraduate and graduate students, who typically have limited financial resources for conference travel, the long range interests of NSF in broadening participation and preparation of a engaged workforce were served. This support was especially important for the undergraduate researchers, as it will motivate them to pursue graduate education and expose them to the state-of-art research developments
