This award provides funds for 25 to 30 undergraduate students to participate in the 1998 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Design Technical Conferences in Atlanta, Georgia. Travel funds will be provided to qualifying undergraduates on the basis a competition that involves the writing of a research paper addressing issues that are foundational to the creation of a scientific formalism for engineering design. The competition will be advertised widely, including on the conference web page, and submissions will be judged by a group of faculty volunteers. A goal of this award is to create enthusiasm among undergraduates for engineering design and a desire to pursue graduate education in the field.
