The proposed grant will promote the design, development and analysis of mobile computing and wireless networking technologies, systems, and applications by encouraging student participation in the ACM Mobicom 2012 conference. Besides technical paper presentations, MobiCom, through this grant, will be able to stimulate several intellectual activities by students including potentially killer apps (through the mobile app competition) and breakthrough research (through the student research competition, and the S3 workshop). Furthermore, the conference offers several opportunities for intellectually stimulating discussions between the students and researchers from around the world.
The participation of students in MobiCom can have an important impact on their development as a junior researcher. The grant will also promote diversity by encouraging and enabling women and other underrepresented minorities to participate.
Twenty five students including women and minority groups were funded under this student travel grant to attend the 19th International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking (MobiCom'13). Students engaged in several activities and helped run the conference as volunteers. They engaged in several activities including the Mobile App competition. A Networking Networking meeting for Women (N2Women) was organized to increase the reach and networking of women engineers working in the mobile networking area. Students reported their activities and outcomes of the grant from their own perspectives. These reported have been compiled into a single Outcomes report which is included within the final report. About MobiCom Conference: MobiCom is a unique conference with technical papers addressing the challenges in the area of mobile computing, from the perspective of networks, wireless and mobile systems, algorithms, and applications. The conference also organizes a plethora of activities: keynote talks given by industrial / academic leaders, workshops, demos, posters, panels, and a rich program of technical talks. The conference has been held annually for 18 times since 1995 and has become the most important forum to present, discuss, and facilitate development of mobile computing and wireless networking technologies, algorithms and systems. It has grown to be one of the most important meetings to attend to demonstrate and interact with other world-leading researchers in the field of mobile computing and networking. MobiCom is also an international conference: each year, it attracts a few hundreds of attendees from all over the world. When held in North America, on average over recent years, North America attendance is found to be 63%, Europe 20%, Asia 16%, and others 1%. The first conference took place in Berkeley, California USA.
