This award is made under the high performance connections portion of ANIR's "Connections to the Internet" announcement, NSF 98-102. It provides support for two years for a DS-3 connection to the vBNS for University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Mauna Kea Observatories through a partnership with the Defense Research and Engineering Network. Applications include remote observing with the Keck telescopes, time domain astronomy, search for near Earth asteroids, study of active volcanoes, research in meteoritics and astrobiology, numerical weather modeling and distance learning. Collaborating institutions include California Institute of Technology, University of Washington, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA Ames Research Center, Georgia Tech University and University of New Mexico in Albuquerque
