An award has been made to Fairleigh Dickinson University under the direction of Dr. Patricia Melloy to acquire a fluorescence microscopy system for research and teaching at the university. The instrument will allow high resolution visualization of cells and their internal structures using fluorescent dyes. Biomolecules within cells can be tagged with fluorescent dyes to understand the location and function of proteins and other important cell components. Research projects that will benefit include studies of cell division in yeast and proteins neural tissue. The instrument will be used in undergraduate courses in biology and chemistry, and in courses for training future science teachers.
