This award supports travel of U.S. postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty participating in the meeting "Emerging Topics in Dynamical Systems and Partial Differential Equations," held in Barcelona, Spain from May 31 through June 4 of 2010. The meeting is organized jointly by the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Groups on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations and on Dynamical Systems, the Real Sociedad Matemática Espanola, the Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques, and the Sociedad Espanola de Matematica Aplicada. The meeting features plenary talks by distinguished speakers, presentations contributed by junior participants, and lectures for a general audience. The conference includes a panel discussion on new directions and open problems in the fields.

The conference brings together a globally diverse group of participants and facilitates interaction between U.S. researchers and their Catalan and Spanish counterparts, with the goal of catalyzing new research collaborations. The conference includes time devoted to discussion of global diversity issues and sharing of experiences on how to improve participation of minority groups in professional mathematics.

Project Report

' that took place in Barcelona, from May 31 to June 4, 2010. It was organized jointly by the mathematical societies: RSME (Real Sociedad Matematica Espanola'), SCM (Societat Catalana de Matematiques), SEMA (Sociedad Espanola de Matematica Aplicada) and SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, USA). It covered the full travel and living expenses of eight junior investigators from the USA. These include postdocs and young assistant professors. Over 700 participants, from many countries and nationalities attended the meeting. Among them, leading world mathematicians gave lectures in applied mathematics. These included four plenary lectures addressed to the public. Topics of the minisymposia covered a wide range of state-of-the art problems in mathematics and science, including image processing, math biology and bio-medical applications, materials sciences, neuroscience, advance numerical methods and computational algorithms and many aspects of dynamical systems research. The young participants had the opportunity to give presentation on their research work. Discussion panels addressing the needs of young investigators were also organized. One focused on job and career opportunities in the USA and the European Community. (The creation of a web page with updated postdoctoral grants and available academic positions emerged as a follow up to the meeting). Another panel focused on the status of women and minorities in the academic world, and compared resources and approaches used in the different countries for their recruitement and retention. The PI has also been recently informed of scholarly exchanges involving the grantees that came out of the conference.
