This award provides funding to help defray the expenses of participants, especially women, graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty, in the "Conference on Recent Developments in L-Infinity Variational Problems and the Associated Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations" that will be held from May 12-15, 2011, on the campus of the University of Kentucky.

This conference will focus on a variety of topics in the theory of partial differential equations, with the overarching theme stemming from a specific subarea of the calculus of variations, namely, from so-called L-infinity variational problems. All of the topic areas cited in the proposal are central to analysis and extremely active subjects of current research. The format of the meeting is such that young people will have ample opportunities to speak and be otherwise engaged in the various conference activities.

Project Report

The main aim of this grant is to support junior participants, including both advanced graduate students and recent PhDs, to attend the conference on "Recent developments L-infinity variational problems and the associated nonlinear partial differential equations". The conference was organized by John Lewis and Changyou Wang, and held at University of Kentucky, May 12-May 14, 2011. The intellectual merit is to bring 14 active experts (half junior and half seniro) who are working on the sub-field of L-infinity variational PDE to exchange the cut-edge findings and identification fo future directions of investigation. The broad impact of this grant is to have gathered more than 25 junior participants to the conference, more than half of whom gave 30 minute presentation of their own works. The conference was extremely well recieved and was regarded as one of the major conferences in the field for the last few years. Some critical problems were identified through the extensive discussions among participants of the meeting. Another outcome of this conference fund is that a minor residual fund has also helped us to organize the second annual Ohio River Analsysi Meeting, which was held at University of Kentucky from April 21-22, 2012, a joint efforf between University fo Kentucky and Universify of Cinnnatti to enhance future collaboration between the two emerging analysis groups.
