This project is creating laboratory modules with an emphasis on activities and perspectives shown to be successful in technological literacy courses for non-engineering students. The PIs are developing a Gateway to Engineering course that is intended to attract students not initially predisposed to major in engineering. This work is based on previous work in developing and teaching a course on technology for non-engineers. This project is focusing specifically on the laboratory component of the course, developing laboratory modules that are easily adapted into existing introduction to engineering courses, or courses on technological literacy for non-engineering students. To meet the unique needs of community college engineering programs, the logistical and commercial feasibility of shipping boxes or palettes of equipment is being investigated.
