Dr. Velez received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Arizona. Currently he is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Arizona. He has been nominated for this award by a colleague who tracks Hispanic, educational and scientific issues as part of his duties. The strengths of the nominee include: A positive impact on the development of hundreds of minority students in mathematics and engineering at the University of Arizona. Implementing team mentoring strategies resulting in strong minority attainment of degrees in mathematics and engineering. A national impact via his presidency of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). During his tenure, he succeeded in changing the focus of the national conference to include a focus on graduate school application workshops. Serving as mentor to students across the country, working with high school students interested in a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.
